When You Join. What to Expect
All our members are volunteers, all valued equally. Previous or existing service ranks do not account for any special privileges within the RSL.
We open most Friday evenings from 5 pm for Happy Hours where members socialise as they do anywhere else with one important exception. At 6 pm we stand and recite the RSL ODE to remember those who gave their lives for you and me and our country:
"They grow not old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them."
After a short silence we say,
Lest we forget."
This act of remembrance is carried out at every RSL Sub-Branch in Australia.
During the year we will ask you to assist the operation of our sub-branch in one or more of the following ways. Managing or assisting to manage:
- Our memorabilia program that involves ordering memorabilia, entering data into an Excel spreadsheet, staffing two two-day events outside Foodland Tanunda to sell memorabilia. These are a few days before ANZAC and Remembrance Days
- Three Sunday Sausage Sizzles outside Mitre 10 at Nuriootpa
- Our kitchen activities, delivering meals to tables, collecting used plates and cutlery and filling the dishwasher etc
- Running raffles within the sub-branch
- Delivery of A4 promotional flyers to local shops and businesses before our two main commemorative days
- Working with a sub-committee on ad hoc or other projects
None of these activities is mandatory and we understand that some of our members are unable to become engaged in activities due to health challenges or other things impacting on their lives.
These are the main jobs that need to be done and someone has to do them so our club can run effectively. We call for volunteers and appreciate those who are able to assist.
